Marble, decorative stone and shell describe different parts of an inlaid object. Knowing how a listing uses these terms helps you compare products without relying on broad luxury labels.
Base versus decoration
The marble may form the main body while smaller fitted pieces create the pattern. Ask the seller to separate the base material from the inlay materials in the specification.
Names worth clarifying
Listings may mention carnelian, malachite, jasper, lapis lazuli or shell. Do not assume all are present in every item. Mother of pearl and other shell names should be identified accurately rather than treated as interchangeable.

What photographs can establish
Close-ups help you judge layout, joints and polish, but material authentication may need more than a photograph. Ask direct questions about any claim that materially affects your purchase.
